How to lose 192 pounds in 7 seconds: Viral video prize giveaway and super secret bonus content!

Contest! Woo-hoo! If you enjoyed the video above (and even if you didn’t) you can enter to win the Half-Assed Prize Pack in celebration of the release of my book, Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir. The prize pack includes:

  • A $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com
  • A signed copy of Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir
  • A signed galley copy. (Galleys are early uncorrected proofs that are sent to reviewers.)
  • A Burt’s Bee’s gift basket
  • My favorite kitchen gadget, the apple corer and slicer
  • A Spaghetti Scepter from the PastaQueen

Prize Pack

Interested? To enter, all you have to do is:

  1. Embed the video in your blog, MySpace, message board post – whatevah. The code to embed the video is here:

  2. Link back to this post: https://www.pastaqueen.com/halfofme/archives/2008/06/how_to_lose_192.html
  3. E-mail me a link to your entry at contest@halfassedbook.com

I’ll check your post to verify you did everything correctly and then you will be entered for the prize. The contest runs from now until 11:59pm EST on June 30, 2008. A winner will be randomly selected in July. You may enter as many times as you like, though each entry must be on a different site. Official rules are available after the jump.

Super Secret Bonus Content!

The purpose of the video is also to announce a promotional experiment I’ve been cooking up – Super Secret Bonus Content! If you bought a copy of my book, you can submit a ticket to access extra content including:

  • 16-page commentary track pamphlet that provides additional insight and observations on the writing process
  • Every recipe mentioned in the book
  • Humorous video of what my cat does while I’m away, mentioned in one of the chapters
  • And more!

Details on how to apply are here. I know when I hear about an interesting book my first reaction is usually, “That sounds cool. I’ll go get that….from the library.” Because I’m cheap. And looking at the number of requests for my book at the local library, I’m not the only thrifty person in town. While I’m honored and grateful that so many people have given up hours of their lives to read the words I’ve written, I’d prefer it if they bought a copy instead of borrowed one. So I asked myself, what would make me buy a book instead of request it from the library? I would need some sort of extra incentive. Thus, the Super Secret Bonus Content was born. We’ll see how it goes. I reserve the right to redact the bonus content offer at anytime (if I determine it’s not worth the hassle), so get your entries in now.

Half-Assed Viral Video Giveaway

  3. Be respectful of other people’s web spaces. Don’t get spammy! It’s rude.
  4. Contest is open to anyone on the planet.

Waah! I can’t get this to work. Sometimes, I wonder how I can remember to breathe.

I’ll keep trying.

Well, I’m finally coming out of the closet as a long time lurker to enter this contest! I’ve been following your blog for a little while now and even read all the archives, and just have to tell you that you kick ass! You’ve inspired me to start eating right and exercising and when I don’t want to I just say “WWPQD?” 8lbs down, quite a few to go, but I will get there! One thing you said in one of your posts was that (paraphrasing) even if it took 2 years to do it, you’d be 2 years older anyway so why not? That is so perfect and I remind myself of that whenever I get discouraged about how long it’s going to take. ANyway, this comment is turning out longer than I anticipated – just wanted to tell you that I entered the contest & I hope I win! :)

Wow, this is a really excellent idea to get the word out about your book? Did you come up with this yourself, or was it an idea from your publisher? Because it is brilliant.

Is this open to international peeps?

I mean, you usually say if your contests aren’t…but on the other hand, that’s a lot of cool stuff that would have to be shipped around the world…

In the last month I noticed two other authors with blogs had posted videos on their web sites and thought it was a good idea. We’ll see if it works!

I just finished reading the super secret bonus features and I have to say that I loved the cat video. It was totally worth all the time it took for me to find my amazon receipt!

This will probably fry my brain trying to figure out, but I’ll give it a go… mostly because I heart you and your book.

But I still can’t figure out links.

I love your blog…but I wouldn’t buy a new book if I wrote it myself. Yes, I am that cheap.

OK… I’m in (http://yarninmypocket.typepad.com/yarn_in_my_pocket/2008/06/today-i-ran.html). I only found your website on Friday, but I am totally blown away by your blog. Not just your achievements – and they are many – but your attitude, too. Thankyou.

Love, love, love the secret content. Worth buying the book to get access. Too bad I don’t have my own blog to enter the other contest…

I had to do my homework first to figure out how to embed the video but I finally got it to work.

http://finallyfiguringitout.blogspot.com/2008/06/192-pound-loss-in-7-seconds.html

I already bought and read my autographed copy of your book but could really use the apple corer thingy. If I win I’ll auction the book off but keep the galley copy and all the other goodies.

Can’t wait to read the bonus stuff. WooHoo … bonus!!!

Helen, you can go to MySpace, set up a free account and try to post it there. Or if there is a message board you frequent, you can announce it there.

Ooh, I bought your book … just last week, actually! I read about half of it the first evening (I would have finished the whole thing, but this past week has been craaaazy, what with finals and all). It’s a great read … and I love the way you’re able to incorporate past blog entries here and there while still maintaining the overarching wisdom of hindsight. Well done.

Your mention of the apple slicer reminded me of why I started reading your blog in the first place. I had just received an apple slicer for Christmas, and I think you had posted an entry not long after the New Year about your apple slicer and how “no kitchen utensil should be giving [you] this much joy.” I remember laughing out loud and knowing that I would want to revisit your blog in the future. It’s nice to know that there are plenty of other dorks out there … I mean this in the highest possible way, of course.

Best of luck to you in your book sales!

Congrats and keep up the good work – I’ve been thinking of asking my friends and family to sponsor my weight loss so they can keep me honest – that or convert my vaccum cleaner into a lipo suction machine..
