The first time I heard Wolf Parade – Shine a Light it didn’t scream “Workout Song!” to me. Which is nice because I don’t like my MP3s to scream at me. But it recently came up on random play in my MP3 player while I was on the treadmill and I realized, “Hey, this is a good workout song!”
This song has a solid, driving beat that propels me through the middle or end of my walk. It’s also in the indie or emo genre which is a nice change of pace from most of the techno or 80’s songs I usually resort to for the high pace portion of my walk. Actually, I don’t know if it’s emo. I never really figured out what emo was. I know what an emu is, does that count? No doubt this is another sign that I am aging. I am increasingly out of touch with youth culture and starting to think “What is that ruckus these kids are listening to these days? Back in my day we didn’t even have MP3s!”
I’ve decided I’ll continue posting workout MP3s as long as they are hosted for free by somebody else. This will limit what I can share, but will let me go to sleep at night without fear of the RIAA raiding my house for digital contraband. The Wolf Parade song is from their official site at Subpop Records.
Why don’t you register pastaqueen.ca and rent a server in Canada? Then you could host zillions of bootleg songs, as long as the RIAA doesn’t figure out you live in the U.S.
I’ve been reading your blog for a while. Very inspiring. You’ve got the kind of perspective on weight loss that I wish I could have.
For what it’s worth, Wolf Parade is (if one is going to genre-fy them) indie-rock. It is most definitely not emo. Emo is like … My Chemical Romance or Dashboard Confessional.
Thanks for the emo clarification, saire. I’ve always found it hard to categorize music and have sort of given up. I had enough problems coming up for categories for my blog entries :)
Haha…Mark’s comment it funny cause Wolf Parade is from Canada.
Anyway! I love love love WP. Their music is fantastic! I’m glad you do, too :D
And if they were in a genre, it would be indie-rock definitely.
