When in Ann Arbor

Here is a piece of advice to hotel/motel owners: Do not leave copies of a newspaper in your rooms which contains a crime map. Your guests will not be reassured to discover two burglaries occurred in the area in November of 2008.

However, it will make them double-check that the sliding door is locked.

I found myself in Ann Arbor, Michigan last weekend for personal business on the coldest day of the year. I’d never been to Ann Arbor before, but now I think of it as a frozen, icy wasteland. However, the drive through blowing snow didn’t faze me. Michigan ain’t got nothin’ on Colorado. Sure, I could barely see, but there wasn’t anything on my windshield, the pavement was visible, and if I did go off the side of the road I was on a flat plain, not the edge of a mountain.

When I walked into my hotel room, I realized how spoiled I have been by my free trips recently. “Oh right,” I said as I looked at the bed which was at most [...]

Gone fishin’

I’ve absconded to North Carolina until Wednesday, so there will be no recipe posted this weekend. I’ll try to check in with a post, but it may be midweek before you see these scraggly curls again. You can play with the funny kitties while I’m gone.

And don’t worry, I didn’t forget to pack the cat.

New York, New York

“10 seconds, move, move!” the stage manager said. I dashed across The Early Show set so fast that I didn’t notice that I’d scurried within three feet of Rick Springfield, let alone have enough time to lick him. I was so focused on reaching the white chairs that I tuned out all 80′s pop stars and heartthrobs in the vicinity. Then I tried to smile cutely for the camera, pretending I didn’t have an odd electronic device stuck in my ear, as they did a live tease of me before my segment. Then the delightful Maggie Rodriguez was interviewing me and I can’t even remember what I said, though I noticed both Maggie and I were wearing black tank tops and I FINALLY got to say the name of my book on national television. CBS is kick-ass when it comes to Half-Assed, and I mean that in a good way. Then the interview was over and I wandered off stage as Rick Springfield stuffed “Jessie’s Girl” in my head and left it there for [...]

Oh, right, I have a blog

It’s odd that the one thing that stops me from blogging for almost a week is a blogging conference. The busier my life gets, the less time I have to write about it. Let’s just stick to bullet points so I can take another nap while my body tries to figure out what time zone I am in.

In San Francisco they paint their houses pink, purple, orange, blue and all sorts of beautiful colors. If I see a purple house in Indiana I automatically wonder, “Was purple paint on sale that week?”

I could not get over how many hills there are in San Francisco. The world has a third dimension, did you know that? Every time I’d drive up a street I’d say, “Wow, look at that hill!” Indiana is so flat that it was shocking to be able to see buildings rising up above and below me on sharp inclines.

I now have 4 USB flash drives. Thank you, swag tables.

My panel went very well. I did not fall off the stage and I kept [...]

Man looking into telescope

Jennette Fulda tells stories to the Internet about her life as a smartass, writer, weight-loss inspiration, chronic headache sufferer, and overall nice person (who is silently judging you). She does this at JenFul now, but you can still have fun perusing her past here.
