I’m about as in touch with pop culture these days as I am with the Prime Minister of Britain, but even I have been unable to avoid the new Beyonce video for “All the Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).”
It’s a simple, yet captivating video featuring Beyonce and two dancers grooving to the song which will camp out in your head with a tent and a campfire and never leave again. It’s based on a Bob Fosse dance performed by Gwen Verdon and two dancers, rocking the pink and yellow pantsuits, called “Mexican Breakfast.” YouTube has several versions of the Gwen Verdon dance with different soundtracks, including the Beyonce single.
The dance has become an Internet meme with several people doing their own versions or dancing along to the original. One guy even did it on the Bonnie Hunt show. A friend of mine has been trying to recruit people to make her own version. I am somewhat tempted because I think it would be hilarious, but I know better. My dance experience is limited […]

When I was in North Carolina, we went to see Stereolab play, only my brain got a little twisted and thought we were going to see Stereophonics. So when a French chick with a keyboard walked out, I had a small epiphany. “Oh, StereoLAB! They’re good too, but I guess they won’t be playing the theme to the British version of The Office.” Stereolab was good, but their opening act, Atlas Sound…well, I hope someone steals the audio equipment off his tour bus so he will stop spreading his sonic misery across the country.
During the concert I witnessed the most odd and extraordinary bout of multi-tasking that I’ve ever seen. It was so weird that I did my best to record the action for you, as though I was present for a yeti sighting. Alas, the room was lit only by Christmas lights, so even after applying a brightening filter it’s hard to tell what this woman is doing. She’s dancing while knitting.

There was no excuse not to use the fitness room at the hotel I stayed at this weekend during my brother’s wedding because it was literally across the hallway from my suite.
I did not request this, it just happened. Of all the possible rooms on three floors, I ended up about 4 feet away from the treadmills and stair-climbers. I woke up early Saturday morning, got dressed and stretched in the dark so I didn’t wake my mother, and stumbled across the hallway. There were two treadmills, but the first one’s power key was broken in half, so you couldn’t turn it on. I turned on the TV and got on the second treadmill and walked for about 5 minutes to warm-up. Then I pushed it up to 5 miles per hour to jog for about three minutes. Next I decided to throw in some one minute intervals where I would ran as fast as I could until I felt like “throwing up a lung” as Skwigg would say. I pushed the speed up to […]
