Igigi by Yuliya Raquel review and $50 gift certificate giveaway

Disclaimer: I received the dresses reviewed in this post for free from Igigi in exchange for publishing a review and hosting a giveaway.

Last year I reviewed an Igigi dress and a few months later a reader commented to tell me she found the perfect wedding dress there. That made me feel rather good, particularly because I know how hard it can be to find pretty clothes when you’re plus-sized.

Igigi sponsored my friend Wendy‘s annual Weetacon party again this year and gave the larger ladies another opportunity to get a free dress in exchange for a review. Or at least that’s what Wendy told us when we sent in our top three picks a month beforehand. Then she took us out to the parking lot on the first night of Weetacon and pulled out all three dresses we’d each requested from her magical SUV which like a TARDIS must have been bigger on the inside than the outside. There was much squeeing and jumping up and down and the experience was as close to the “Favorite [...]

Twitter: It’s better than cable

Photo by The West End / by NCND 2.0 CC

I had avoided watching the Butler basketball game in the second round of the NCAA tournament because I’ve decided I can’t stand to watch sports games when I actually care about the teams. It makes me anxious. (I can’t watch The Amazing Race either because I get worried that the good people will miss their flights and the bad people will win because this is not scripted and evil sometimes wins.) As I confessed last year, I love the Butler Bulldogs, and I still find comfort in the idea that there is a parallel universe somewhere in which Gordon Hayward’s buzzer beater shot from half-court actually landed in the basket, they won the tournament, and someone is producing a movie about it. And I don’t even care about basketball!

So, there I was avoiding the game, which was easy because it was on cable and I do not have cable. My dad was visiting, so we were watching a game between BYU and Gonzaga, which sounds more [...]

I’m no quitter!

I bought myself a Playstation 3 for my birthday last October and I kinda love it. It plays DVDs, Blu-ray discs*, video files from my computer, and MP3s. It can also access Netflix streaming movies and as a nice bonus I hear it also plays video games.

One thing does bother me about it. To access Netflix streaming the Playstation launches the Netflix app. When you’re done, you have to exit the app to get back to the main Playstation menu. However, every time you do this you get this screen:

Everytime I see it I want to yell at the screen, “I’m no quitter!! Quitting is for losers…but yes, I want to quit.” It feels so wrong to tell the TV I want to quit. I prefer to stick with things and achieve my goals if possible. I wish the screen said, “Do you want to exit?” because I exit buildings and highways all the time and have no problem exiting. Playstation programmers, if you are reading please fix this in the next release!

The CHOCOLATE & VICODIN blog book tour reaches the end of the line. (But you might still win a book!)

The CHOCOLATE & VICODIN blog book tour reaches the end of the line today with its last stop. Check out the interview and review at Sheesh with The Merry, who you might remember better from Cranky Fitness. Big thanks to everyone who took part in the tour!

The blog tour has been lots of fun, and their are still a few opportunities to win a free book if you visit the posts listed in the full blog tour itinerary here. In addition to the blog tour, several other blogs have been kind enough to post reviews and host their own giveaways. You can find out more about them on this post and this post on my news blog.

Don’t forget, you might win an iPod or gift certificates to Amazon or iTunes simply by spreading the word about the book here!

I’ve got one last radio interview scheduled for tomorrow on LA’s public radio station KPCC during the Patt Morrison Program at 5:40pm EST or 2:40pm PST local time. Please [...]

Mix it up: Same title, different song

I used to make mixed tapes for friends, actual tapes, which is one of those signs that I’ve been on the planet longer than a steadily growing percentage of the population. I make mixed CDs now and don’t even own a tape player, which means I won’t be listening to the recordings of my 6th grade band concert any time soon.

Sometimes I get high-concept ideas for CD mixes, like a mix of songs that track the progress of my life. Or a CD where all the tracks are covers of the same song. My latest concept is “Same Name, Different Song” which consists of songs that have the same name but aren’t covers, just totally different songs. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

Forever Young – Rod Stewart

Forever Young – Alphaville (Though I personally prefer the Youth Group cover)

Breathe – Erasure

Breathe – Sixpence None the Richer

Breathe – Jane French (The theme from “Passions” oh how I miss you)

Breathe – Maria McKee

Photograph – Weezer

Photograph – REM feat. Natalie [...]
