At the US National Figure Skating Championships. (Where, alas, I did not get to ride the Zamboni.)

Last November I saw a TV ad for the National Figure Skating Championships being held in Greensboro, NC in January. Being highly susceptible to advertising and sequins, I bought a ticket to the Skating Spectacular. That’s the exhibition held after the competition where the skaters get to have fun and dance to music with lyrics. I drive an hour to Greensboro all the time to see my headache doctor, so it was no big deal. And I already knew where to pick up a Cheerwine slushie on the way out of town.

I got my ticket early, so I scored awesome seats in the second row, right behind an Alka-Seltzer Plus ad. (That’s not why this photo looks like it’s from Picasso’s blue period. That was just the low lighting.) The lady sitting next to me thought they were horrible seats and started to complain about how the stadium sucked and her hotel was too far away, whah, whah, whah. This made me realize that your attitude affects 90% of how you perceive life. I thought [...]

This is the time of year that move really pays off

I keep both Indianapolis and Chapel Hill as locations on the dashboard of The Weather Channel app on my phone, precisely so I can look at readings like these and cackle loudly to myself:

Chapel Hill: Sunny, 47 degrees

Indianapolis: Light Snow, 23 degrees

Yes, July was so hot my air conditioner couldn’t quite keep up, but it is worth it for warm winter days when I don’t have to wear a hat.

Oh, and the reason I have little red and green stickers by the two buttons at the bottom is because you can’t tell what color each one is unless the light is on behind them. I put them there after I kept hanging up on people when I meant to answer the phone.

Congrats to DietGirl on 10 years of blogging! (And you’ll never guess what she’s giving away)

Ok, that’s not true, you can probably guess what she’s giving away, and it’s not a two-headed squid.

My friend Shauna Reid, author of The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl, has been writing on her delightful blog of the same name for 10 years now. I have to give her big props for her dedication and work ethic. Ten years is like a century on the Interwebs. Thanks for all the laughter and tears, Shauna!

And as if I couldn’t love her more, she’s giving away two advance release copies of CHOCOLATE & VICODIN to kick off her 10th Birthday Sell Out celebration. Just head over to this post on her site, leave a comment and you’ll be entered to win. Keep checking in every day, too, because Shauna’s giving away a lot of great stuff and entries are open to people outside of the US.

Eat your fruits and…what were those other things?

After looking at the food diary I’ve been keeping for the last two weeks, it’s hard to figure out when the last time was that I ate a vegetable. Fruits? Check! I have devoured pears, mangoes, and even little pineapple bits in my yogurt. Vegetables? Hmmm, well the Subway sandwich had some lettuce, tomato and red onion on it, so technically that counts. And the Palek Paneer I got at Whole Foods was full of spinach, but I was eating it more for the cheese.

I used to snack on baby carrots and hummus, but I can’t seem to find the baby carrots at the grocery store I visit most often, so either they’re hidden or the baby carrots grew up fast like kids do these days. I also used to snack on celery, mostly because of that delightful crunchy texture, which is almost worth getting celery veins stuck in my teeth. I just haven’t bought any lately. Otherwise, I’m not much of a veggie fan, mostly because [...]
