Check out my new mug!

Less than a month after my favorite coffee mug was transformed by the force of gravity and a little black cat, reader and potter, Pat, sent me a new one! Thanks, Pat! The new mug is the exact same blue/purple as the old one, which I find to be amazing. It’s also dishwasher and microwave safe, though I’ll assume it is not safe from gravity and cats, so I’ll be careful where I put it.

Blaaah-ging

I swear to God, I’ve been back in Indiana for less than 48 hours and I already feel like crawling underneath the covers and devising a way to be a professional blob. Hello, gray skies and 50-degree weather! Go f*&$ yourself, will you? I wish I could call in depressed to work. I suppose I’ll just call in “blah” to my blog instead.

Rental adventures

I am out in North Carolina scouting for a place to live. One location was in the lead for several hours, until I came back later to reexamine the neighborhood and saw this on the neighbor’s porch:

You can change that label from “Roach away” to “Potential tenant away.”

At another place, the rental agent recognized me! (Hi, Holly!) This is only the third time I’ve run into a reader in real life outside of a blogging conference. It is bizarre, but kind of cool too. Sadly, that place is a bit out of my price range, but it would have been cool to live someplace where I am totally famous.

You can’t really own music anyway

In preparation for my relocation, I am relocating a lot of my stuff—either to the trash compactor or to the half-price bookstore. While I feel some natural attachment to the items I own, it is amazing what you’re willing to let go of when you ask yourself, “Do I want to haul this 600 miles over the mountains?” So, farewell to my VHS fansubs of the fifth season of Sailor Moon! Adios to my college linguistics textbook! And good-bye to the majority of my CD collection!

When I was a kid, I would sometimes go through my dad’s record collection which took up two shelves of the living room bookcase. The vinyl discs were somewhat fascinating, and it was interesting to think of a time when this was the only way to purchase recordings of music. Looking at my hundreds of CD cases, I realized they are the 1990′s equivalent of my dad’s record collection. I haven’t used any of the discs since I ripped them to MP3 several years ago. When you put about 200 [...]

A winner and mutant strawberries

So, wow, the Bertolli Giveaway got 319 entries, which is the most comments I’ve received on a blog entry EVER. That includes the posts I wrote about quitting my job and my two book announcements. I guess the moral of this story is that the next time I have any big news to share, I should also give away an ice cream maker.

Seriously though, I must have spent an hour or two (grand total) approving all the first-time commenters that entered. I am grateful for all my readers and I thank you for visiting the site, but that didn’t stop me from crawling out of bed at 12:30am last night to turn off comments on the post after the entry deadline because I didn’t want to find 30 more emails in my inbox the next morning. Congratulations to Amy from Michigan who was the randomly drawn winner this morning! She has already accepted her prize. And thanks to Bertolli too!

In other news, look at the mutant, monster, strawberries I got at the grocery store yesterday. [...]
