I've moved to JennetteFulda.com

PastaQueen meets Jared, The Subway Guy, in a wacky weight-loss crossover!

I woke up at 7:30am last Friday, by choice, and not because I had a flight to catch. What could lure me out of bed at that hour?

Jennette and Jared

Why, it’s Jared the Subway Guy, national sandwich-chain spokesperson and Indianapolis resident! While a photo op with Jared was a good lure, the free breakfast and coffee they served had a strong appeal too. I attended the Subway Fun Run at the Broad Ripple location of the sandwich store last Friday, and as I learned in college, if you feed them, they will come:

Feed them and they will come

Of course, on first try, the photo came out more like this:

PQ's crappy camera strikes again

Yes, PastaQueen’s crappy camera strikes again. I shouldn’t bitch though. My Canon Powershot had a near-death experience last month when I dropped it on a wooden patio. I thought it was a goner, but after I whacked the lens (almost) back into alignment, I found that I’m able to take photos again (as long as I don’t try to zoom over 3X). Thankfully the PR people at the event had a better camera and I got a clear shot.

I was given an opportunity to interview Jared, but I honestly didn’t know what to ask him, and I didn’t want to be the eleventy-billionth person to ask him, “What’s your favorite sandwich?” So, I decided to just take the photo and leave the man be. Afterwards, when I was looking at the photo, my first thought was, “Do I look fat?” Because if you’re standing next to a weight-loss wonder, I suppose that’s one of the first things to come to mind. The one thing I would like to say about Jared is that he’s tall.

Jared is tall!

Ok, yes, everyone looks tall next to a pack of grade-schoolers. But I am 5’9″ and Jared clearly towers over me in our photo, so the guy’s got to be about 6’4″.

The fun run was held to bring attention to Subway’s new breakfast menu. Stores will now begin opening at 7:30am weekdays and serving breakfast items. I sampled the Western Egg & Cheese and it was decent.

The run was pretty nice, particularly because I got to walk on the Monon Trail, which I used to run on all the time when I lived in my old apartment. I really do miss that trail. It’s also been awhile since I’ve gone to an official running events, and it was nice to get back into that atmosphere where not everyone is an athletic jock, but we’ve got our running shoes and our paper numbers and, gosh darn it, we’re going to give it our best!

As part of the event, the PR people gave me three $5.00 gift cards to Subway to give away. As your reward for reading to the end of the entry, you can enter by commenting with a question you would have asked Jared if you’d had the opportunity. Winner will be drawn randomly. Submissions will be open until 11:59pm on Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

I would ask Jared if he still likes Subway sandwiches! After eating them everyday, I would think he’d be sick of them!

JourneyBeyondSurvival • April 6, 2010 at 9:22 am

I love it! I am living in Indiana. It’s nice to have a positive spin on the place. Looks like you had fun.

Katie • April 6, 2010 at 9:34 am

I would have asked who was the worst (or best) athlete he’s done a Subway ad with.

Denise Paul • April 6, 2010 at 9:34 am

I would ask Jared what his workout routine and diet are like now that he’s maintaining instead of losing, and how his life (and lifestyle) has changed since he started losing the weight.

Brandi • April 6, 2010 at 9:46 am

I would ask Jared if he still eats subway often and what his workout routine is like.

Kaitlin • April 6, 2010 at 9:48 am

I would have asked him what his least favorite chore is.

Laura Pugh • April 6, 2010 at 9:56 am

I would want to know how Jared feels about his overweight self. How does he handle it when people are insensitive to the fact that Overweight Jared is actually the same person as Fit and Trim Jared?

Carbzilla • April 6, 2010 at 9:57 am

You look great!!!

I would have asked, “If you could get one message through to the obese children of America, what would that be?”

I’m also kinda wondering if he switches his bread up, but that’s the softball question.

How fun – good for you!

Ashley • April 6, 2010 at 10:09 am

I would ask Jared if he ever tried any weird combinations on his sandwiches, and if any of them were good enough he would recommend them.

Carmie • April 6, 2010 at 10:14 am

The Jared questions are cracking me up!

I would have asked him if he ever has a craving for a Big Mac or a McRibb and, if so, how he goes about scoring one without seeming like a Subway traitor!

Nicole, RD • April 6, 2010 at 10:18 am

Love that you met Jared! New to your blog and love it!

Pauline Davis • April 6, 2010 at 10:22 am

I wonder how often Jared eats Subway.

Ashley • April 6, 2010 at 10:43 am

I would have asked him what finally got him off the couch and eating pizzas? What was the “last straw” that made him make the change?

Great blog Pastaqueen!!!

Shelley B • April 6, 2010 at 11:01 am

I would have asked him how tall he is…;)

JEM • April 6, 2010 at 11:07 am

I would ask him what he thinks the key to maintaining his loss all these years is and what his biggest struggle has been.

Kristin • April 6, 2010 at 11:13 am

Heh. I’d like to ask him if he ever goes to Quizno’s. I like what a PP suggested about weird sandwich topping combinations, though.

LAF • April 6, 2010 at 11:23 am

I would ask Jared what his favorite vacation destination would be. He has to have been to some pretty awesome places what with all the millions he’s earned.
Don’t ya think?

Amy • April 6, 2010 at 11:24 am

I really would like to know what his favorite Subway sandwich is….

Elizabeth • April 6, 2010 at 11:26 am

I would ask where he got his glasses from – they geeky cool! :-)

Elizabeth • April 6, 2010 at 11:26 am

I would ask where he got his glasses from – they are geeky cool! :-)

Sorry for the bad grammar above!

eggy wegg • April 6, 2010 at 11:34 am

What did he think of that “South Park” episode that he was featured in — the whole AIDS vs. aides one. HILARIOUS!

Amy • April 6, 2010 at 11:36 am

I would have asked him how it feels to have his body become public property. His minor weight losses and gains, his appearance, his eating habits: since he became a Subway spokesperson, people who have never met him believe that those things are their business and that they’re entitled to comment on his physical being. I’d like to know how that feels.

she overflows • April 6, 2010 at 11:42 am

I would have asked Jared if he’s considered writing a second book, since I enjoyed his first book.

Alexandra • April 6, 2010 at 11:44 am

Looks like a fun time! :-) I just wanted to stop by and let you know the pedometer arrived. Thanks so much!

scone • April 6, 2010 at 11:53 am

I would ask if he ever gets the urge to rebel against his clean cut image– skunk stripes, tatoos, motorcycles…

Lynne • April 6, 2010 at 11:55 am

Ask him about greek yogurt :-)

anniegirl • April 6, 2010 at 11:58 am

What his major was in college & his workout routine.

Joni • April 6, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I would ask Jared what’s his favorite hobby. I mean, surely the guy has interests besides sandwiches!

Lori K. • April 6, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I would have asked him what is favorite thing to eat BESIDES Subway is.

Julia • April 6, 2010 at 12:12 pm

I would have asked him ‘now that he’s lost the weight how many times a week does he eat Subway’?
Good for you for waking up early for food and fun :)

Lauren @ Eater not a runner • April 6, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I’d love to ask him about how he works out, and if he still eats tons of subway?!

Minda • April 6, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I would ask him if it’s weird going to the grocery store when the whole world thinks of you as a role model for healthy eating. Do people look in his cart to make sure there are no Oreos?

Jenna Z • April 6, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I would have asked him if he still had skin fold issues. I know, kind of personal but I think that is a MAJOR issue of anyone who has lost weight and I’d be interested to know if he had surgery to help with it or if he just lives with it like the rest of us.

Alison • April 6, 2010 at 12:34 pm

My dad insists that my husband looks just like Jared. So I think I’d ask Jared if he agrees!

Liz • April 6, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I would ask him how often does he eat subway and if he is sick of the subs yet?!

Cheryl • April 6, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I would have asked Jared how tall he was :)

Laurel • April 6, 2010 at 1:11 pm

I would ask him about the effect of losing his privacy, and how he deals with always being recognized in public, and possibly monitored in his eating/drinking.

Cheryl in AL • April 6, 2010 at 1:11 pm

What is your favorite sandwich. Just kidding… What is the most important thing you have discovered as a result of you weight loss?

adrienne • April 6, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I’m with Elizabeth. Where did he get those great glasses frames?

Emily • April 6, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I would ask how much money he spent on his “Subway diet” over the weight loss period!

Lisa@Pickles and Cheese • April 6, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I would ask him what is his favorite sandwich BECAUSE I really want to know!

Christine • April 6, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I don’t really like Subway so I have no question for Jared. I just wanted to say that I like your longer hair, PQ.

Katy • April 6, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I would ask him if he thinks it’s possible for humans and dinosaurs to coexist peacefully.

Dee • April 6, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I would ask him if he’s ever read Pastaqueen’s blog or read her book!

Kris • April 6, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I would have asked him if he gets the same toppings on his sandwich every time.

Debbi S. • April 6, 2010 at 2:25 pm

It would be interesting to find out what he REALLY thinks of Subway after all these years. Of course, he’s paid WAY too much to actually give any dirt or negative thoughts but wouldn’t it be interesting.

Dolores • April 6, 2010 at 2:26 pm

I would have asked him if he has any loose skin that he has had surgically, mmm, taken in.

Trini • April 6, 2010 at 2:36 pm

“How many subway sandwiches can you eat in a day?”

Dinah Soar • April 6, 2010 at 3:51 pm

After telling him what an inspiration he is, I’d ask him what he eats now that he is in maintenance–surely not Subway for every meal.

I think the flack he has taken for eating Subway at every meal to lose weight is ridiculous…it was a hecka’va lot better than being morbidly obese.

He deserves a lot of credit for being able to overcome fat while he is still young. I read his book and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ruth • April 6, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I would ask Jared if he has to pay when he eats at Subway.

MB • April 6, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I would have asked Jared if he knows Tony, the Anti-Jared. ;)

Erin • April 6, 2010 at 4:14 pm

I’d ask Jared what he thinks of the Jimmy John’s “unwich”…come on…they’re so fast you’ll freak AND uber tasty. Oh, and if he’s allowed to even eat at Jimmy John’s. :)

Helen • April 6, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I would ask him if it was eating things other than Subway twice a day that caused him to put some weight back on. Because you know now he can eat it 3 times a day…

Carol • April 6, 2010 at 4:26 pm

I would ask Jared, “what’s the oddest or most suprising situation he’s been in with his Subway fame?”

Rebecca • April 6, 2010 at 4:40 pm

I would have asked Jared how he coped with the public backlash a few months ago when he gained a bit of weight….

Mary • April 6, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Jared do you know Tony the Anit Jared and is that name just a publicity gimmick? Just a note to Jared–anyone that can lose the amount of weight you have is a true inspiration.

The Homebody • April 6, 2010 at 5:42 pm

It’s great to see all of those kids out there. The child obesity issue has been put to the forefront of the country (finally) and it’s nice to see that parents are getting their kids more active in events like this.

Jess • April 6, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I would ask him if he completely hates subway and those pants now.

Lydia • April 6, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Does constantly being recognized and “checked” for what groceries he’s buying, etc., keep him on track, or is it just a nuisance? Is he so “cured” of his former habits and lifestyle that he could be an anonymous person like the rest of us, and still maintain his fit lifestyle, or does being a role model help in this regard?

Lindsay • April 6, 2010 at 6:21 pm

I would’ve asked Jared if he is upset that they don’t have a “Jared sandwich” at subway….

Jaime • April 6, 2010 at 6:29 pm

you should pick me as a winner since april 7 is my birthday (seriously it is and im turning 30 tomorrow).
a few years ago when jared was kind of new to subway a guy at my old job ran into him at friendly’s, he got a pic of him on his cell phone and was so happy he got to meet him. he was nice to this guy, im sure he is normally a nice guy

Linh • April 6, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I would ask Jared if he still has struggles and what he does to stay on track and maintain.

Melissa • April 6, 2010 at 6:47 pm

I would ask Jared about yogurt. Greek yogurt, specifically.

Kristen • April 6, 2010 at 8:26 pm

I’d like to know if he still loves the smell of Subway’s bread after all the sandwiches he eats. Our library is next to Subway, and I want one every time I go there because the bread smells so wonderful!!

mrs darling • April 6, 2010 at 8:35 pm

I would ask how he is maintaining his weight loss now?

Bethama • April 6, 2010 at 8:45 pm

“If you’d known your weight-loss plan would become such a marketing phenomenon, how might you have approached it differently from the get-go?

jennifer williams • April 6, 2010 at 9:40 pm

i would ask jarod what’s his advice for staying motivated.

April Long • April 6, 2010 at 10:38 pm

I would ask him what’s helping him maintain his weight loss long term (other than subway sandwiches!) I know lots of people who have lost lots of weight, but then struggle constantly with keeping it off (myself included.)

Kirsten • April 6, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I would have asked Jared if he ever has to work again since he must have tons of that Subway money.

Beth • April 6, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I think I want to ask him why he chose to eat Subway to lose weight in the first place (why not some other restaurant/meal plan/diet/lifestyle change)?

Southside Amy • April 6, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I’d ask him 1.) do you think the publicity you’ve received was worth doing the endorsement (is there a downside to being famous Jared?)? and 2.) What is the Subway Corporation really like? Are they really good guys or are they no better than the other “fast food chains”….is their “healthy lifestyle” just PR or is it REAL? (although, as a City Planner, I will say that I LOVE the fact that Subways do not have drive-throughs, so I give the Subway guys a lot of credit there.)

Deanna • April 7, 2010 at 12:58 am

“Jared … are you allowed to eat at Quiznos?”

Suz • April 7, 2010 at 3:00 am

Gee, I guess my head hasn’t been “fixed” yet because I was wondering if Jared goes crazy and binges and what is his trigger food…like mine is potato chips…I can’t even buy them. They whisper with that husky salty crunchy voice, beckoning me to open the bag….just a little….a few won’t hurt you…potatoes are natural, we have potassium….everyone needs salt to live….come hereeeeeeee…..we are Reduced Fat Ruffles….we’re practically a health food….just a couple….

Caro • April 7, 2010 at 4:33 am

The only question that I could come up with is, “Who is your favorite person that you have met as a result of your Subway fame?” (Of course, the right answer would have been “you.”)

Jacqueline Morris • April 7, 2010 at 7:43 am

Question for Jared? (and my big chance to win a Subway gift card, please)

After starting the Subway eating routine, when did first say “Enough!! I want to eat my comfort foods.” and what motivated you to return to Subway eating plan?

Beep • April 7, 2010 at 9:25 am

I’d like to know what he eats when not eating at Subway.

Melissa • April 7, 2010 at 9:39 am

I would ask him if he ever worries about gaining the weight back.

Zentient • April 7, 2010 at 9:45 am

I would ask him about his cooking skills, and his favorite dishes to prepare.

Amy • April 7, 2010 at 11:03 am

I would ask him if he like the cookies at Subway as much as I do.

lisa • April 7, 2010 at 11:12 am

I would ask him if he is contractually bound to never eat at a Quiznos or Panera :)

psychsarah • April 7, 2010 at 12:47 pm

I would ask him about his day job-what does he do when he’s not the Subway guy?

Leigh Ann • April 7, 2010 at 1:52 pm

I was wondering the same: does he ever eat at McDonald’s? And if he does, does he go in disguise? Just kidding. Actually, I’ve always had a positive view of him–he seems like a nice guy. I do wonder if he finds being a role model tiring at times. But of course, that’s his JOB, I guess. He looks quite fit.

Manda • April 7, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Love Katy’s question! It’s been burning in my mind also.

And I would ask Jared how fast he is, like his race time. And if he would consider running next to me (well, you). Wearing a Pasta Queen sticker on his back (or forehead?) to advertise the blog. And if he minds if your minions take lots of pictures. And post them online. And if he minds if you now claim that you are faster than him. And that you’re best friends. No big deal, right Jared?

Manda • April 7, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Seriously, we need to know. Like yesterday.

Jen • April 7, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Boxers or briefs…lol

Susan L. • April 7, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I would ask Jared if being a well-known Subway spokesman makes it easier or harder (because of the pressure) to live a healthy lifestyle.

Denise • April 7, 2010 at 4:09 pm

I would have asked him if he gets free sandwiches for life!

I just saw the first Subway breakfast commercial yesterday and I must admit it intrigued me.

Krista • April 7, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I would ask where he got the cool geek specs and has he ever completely tired of Subway food.

Renee • April 7, 2010 at 5:07 pm

I would ask Jared what was the trigger that got him to decide he was sick of being fat?

Neena • April 7, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Does he still eat Subway sandwiches daily?

Sarah P. • April 7, 2010 at 6:23 pm

I would ask Jared if he’s single. If so, I think you two should get together!

Mindy • April 7, 2010 at 8:25 pm

I would ask him if he has a disguise for when he REALLY wants to just eat something else and not be questioned about it!

Jamie G • April 7, 2010 at 10:12 pm

I would ask him where his favorite place to travel is. I studied in Dublin, and it was comforting to have a Subway there to counteract the fish n’ chips! :)

Lori Moore • April 8, 2010 at 12:01 am

I would ask Jared if he misses being anonymous? Does he like being recognized everywhere?

dee • April 8, 2010 at 4:56 am

I know this has been submitted post contest. I read the blog yesterday and hesitated to say what I would really like to ask. A lady who works for Subway (and has for many years) told me that long after Jared became famous for his huge weight loss, it came out that he had gastric bypass surgery prior to his regularly chowing down on subway sandwiches. Apparently Subway found out some time in 2008. I would have to ask him if this were true.
