I’ve been thinking of two people this morning. First, my friend Kyle Hepp (who’s a girl, despite the typically masculine name), who is a photographer in Santiago, Chile. I opened up my web browser to MSNBC this morning to see the words “8.8 quake hits Chile; huge tsumani feared” in all caps, with the big, red, breaking-news bar above it. All caps and big red bars are very bad news indeed. The pictures of overturned cars aren’t very reassuring either. I haven’t heard anything from her on her blog or Twitter. I’m going to tell myself she is ok and is most likely without Internet and electricity to tell us so. But, hopefully she will check in soon.
UPDATE: Kyle is okay! Yay! Read about her earthquake experience here.
Second, I wanted to wish Erin Shea good luck. Good luck, Erin! Erin is running a half-marathon today in New Orleans. She’s been tracking her training on a group blog. I remember how much work training for my own half-marathon was and I wish for her good weather, [...]

Farm Fresh Delivery has been delivering vegetables to my front door for two months now, and it’s going fairly well. I have yet to trip over a parsnip on the way out the door, and I’ve eaten several good-for-me plants I wouldn’t have otherwise. Yes, I threw out half the bok choy when it started to rot, after telling myself every night I’d do stir-fry for dinner and then popping open a can of soup instead. And I think they sent me a rutabaga instead of a beet last week. But I have been eating most of the fruits and vegetables before they turn slimy, and I’m content to continue the service.
My best discovery so far was how tasty snow peas can be. My roommate has a vegetable steamer and showed me how to cook the snow peas with it. They made for a crunchy snack that I know I would never have made otherwise. Broccoli and cauliflower definitely taste better chopped up fresh instead of defrosted from the frozen foods section. And I’ve [...]

It is a bit disturbing that all these Olympic athletes I see on TV are younger than me. There is 23-year-old snowboarder, Shaun White, and 25-year-old skier, Lindsey Vonn, and 27-year-old speed skater, Apolo Ohno, who is apparently an old, old man. I bet he is sponsored by the AARP. When I watch the events, a voice inside of me chants, “Go…29-year-olds!” while wondering if there are any 29-year-olds competing in the games. They might have been relegated to seniors competitions at this point.
But as I contemplate my old age and the fact that I am probably too old to win a gold metal in luge, I am not too upset. A few weeks ago, as I exited a coffee shop, a teenage girl walked up to me and asked if I had change for the bus. She and her friend appeared well-groomed and sober, so I was 95% certain I was not giving them change to buy crack cocaine on the next corner. I emptied my change purse into her palm and wished her [...]

So, I should be posting about week three of The Beck Diet Solution right now, only I have not finished week three of The Beck Diet Solution. I don’t even remember why or when I stopped, only that I kept meaning to read the next chapter, but I stumbled over some Superbowl guacamole and chips on my way to the bookshelf, and they fell right in my mouth! I know, crazy, eh? Blah blah blah, excuse-cakes. I had a cold, a toothache, five million freelance projects. Whatever. I think mostly my dopamine levels dropped, and my brain did not see this as a fun new thing anymore and I was less motivated to keep reading.
But, now I feel really guilty! Because people have asked me, “PastaQueen, where is you post about the third week of The Beck Diet Solution?” And I’m having flashbacks to freshman year of college, honors class, when Professor Tunberg is asking me what I thought of chapter four of The Odyssey, which I have not read, and I make some strange [...]
