The Eleven-year scarf

It took me eleven years to knit this scarf:

You would think that after eleven years, it would be long enough to wrap around the Earth two times. Yet, it’s only about four feet long. That’s because I haven’t actually been knitting for eleven years, I’ve been knitting for a couple of days and then putting the scarf away for safekeeping for a couple years. Repeat as necessary.

There was a knitting craze at a summer camp I attended in the summer of 1997. One of the groups learned how to knit squares that would be sewn together to make a blanket. As a result, you’d see girls and guys all around campus bent over their knitting needles. I wasn’t in the knitting group, but I decided this was a good opportunity to learn how to knit, so on Parent’s Day we went to Wal-Mart and purchased some needles and yarn. That year I made a really ugly blue scarf.

Once I got home, I wanted another project, so I got some black and white yarn to make [...]

My blog, now with more tweets

Not all of my readers follow me on Twitter. Either they don’t understand this whole Twitter thing or they don’t care about tweets and retweets and twittermania, or it’s just too much work to keep up with a blog and Twitter and Facebook and OMG my head is gonna’ explode! That’s cool. I get that. Millions of people were texting before I sent the first message on my cell phone, and I still don’t know what Google Wave is or what it does or why I should care.

However, I wanted to share my tweets with the segment of my blog readers who don’t subscribe to Twitter, but I also wanted to incorporate them in a more organic way than that widget in my sidebar allows. So I’ve updated the home page of my blog so my recent tweets appear in the stream. Both the blog posts and the tweets are sorted in descending chronological order in regards to when they were posted.

The tweets do not appear in my blog feed. I figure, if you want [...]

The cats are thankful for loosely sealed Tupperware containers

I was away for Thanksgiving, visiting family in Louisville and enjoying this lovely Edible Arrangement:

Unbeknownst to me, while my roommate and I were away, the kitties were up to these shenanigans:

We do not know how many Snickerdoodles were lost in the bellies of the felines. Fortunately for my roommate, she has plenty of extra dough in the fridge to make more. Unfortunately, I love me some Snickerdoodles and will have to work hard not to sneak in some snacking like the kitties did.

As for the Edible Arrangement, it was as tasty as it was lovely!

Do they have Thanksgiving in Burbank?

When I was in LA, I drove to Burbank and took the Warner Brothers Studio VIP tour. See, there’s the water tower!

Sadly there were no Animaniacs loitering in the vicinity. I saw a great many interesting things on the tour, which I’ll talk about in another entry if anyone isn’t sick of hearing about LA already. (I met Adam Baldwin! I have very, very, vague “Chuck” spoilers!) Take a look at this photo first:

We got to walk around an area of the prop department, which is more like the prop building, which was home to furniture, silverware, and rubber chickens. In the hallway, some items were pulled out and tagged with labels reserving them for different productions. As you can see, an armoire was reserved for the show True Blood, but the reservation date is for today, Thanksgiving! I hope no one is working on the WB Studio lot on this holiday, particularly not any vampires sucking down turkey blood.

In that spirit, I wish you all a happy day, even you foreigners or vegans who [...]

I’m just a cat sitting on the ledge of the universe

Picture by mgrenner57 used under Creative Commons license.

When I fly, it is inevitable that I start thinking about the meaning of life. No matter the airline or the destination, no matter the time zone or the country, when I look out an airplane window, my spirit soars with awe and my stomach sinks with terror. Looking down on our planet, I can see small square stamps called fields and narrow long lines called roads. The cars speeding down the highway look like ants slowly trudging across a desert. When I zoom out on the world like that, human civilization doesn’t look all that different from an ant colony or a bee hive or a bacterial growth. It makes me wonder, is there a life form out there that would look at our world and diagnose humanity as an odd and not that fascinating fungus?

Then I think of my cats, because I can always bring the subject back to my cats. Java Bean and Officer Krupke don’t know about the recent economic recession or the effects [...]
