I have been studying South Beach for the last few weeks and have decided it’s the path I’m going to follow for a while. My question for you is how closely you followed it especially in phase 1. Did you make every meal he tells you to or did you modify based on your likes and dislikes for food? – Kim
One of the reasons I didn’t say what diet I was following in my book is because I don’t want people think there is only one way to lose weight. If you are on a sane, healthy, balanced diet that results in burning more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. There are lots of plans that will get you there and South Beach is only one of them. I like South Beach, but honestly, I don’t care what you’re eating. (Unless you have a Cadbury Crème egg, in which case – Look! Over there! Something shiny! *PastaQueen steals chocolate-creamy goodness and stuffs it in her face.*)
That being said, I’ve gotten several inquiries [...]

I had no idea who Feargal Sharkey was except that he had a funny name and he recorded a guilty pleasure of mine, A Good Heart. It is a very 80′s song with a video that features two, TWO, drummers, because one cute drummer is not enough when you are making a cheesy 80′s video. I never told anyone I listened to this song, just like I don’t tell them about the cheesy TV shows I sometimes watch. (Smallville, I’m looking at you.)
I was listening to Pandora the other day which is a free web service which plays songs that are similar to an artist or song you suggest. I entered “Maria McKee” and was listening to several folk/rock chicks when suddenly a cover of “A Good Heart” by Maria McKee came on.
“What a funny song to cover!” I thought as I looked up from the bills I was sorting. “I thought I was the only one who had ever heard this song.” So I searched for Maria McKee on Wikipedia, and what do you [...]

I got an email blast from my neighborhood bike store yesterday, and in a moment of optimism or madness I signed up for an event they advertised: The 26th Annual Bop to the Top. Tired of taking part in horizontal races, I’ve chosen to partake in a vertical race up 37 floors of the One America building in downtown Indianapolis. No, I haven’t been training. No, I can’t remember the last time I was on a Stairmaster. But I’m still in fairly good shape and this sounds like a lark, so I paid my registration fee and now I have to show up.
The race is also a fundraiser for the Riley Children’s Hospital, Indiana’s first and only pediatric facility. My blog gets a lot of visitors, and it occurred to me that if every one of you just gave $1 we could raise over a thousand dollars for sick kids. If you want to sponsor me, visit my fundraising page. It’s too bad I didn’t hear about this event sooner or else I could [...]

Here is a piece of advice to hotel/motel owners: Do not leave copies of a newspaper in your rooms which contains a crime map. Your guests will not be reassured to discover two burglaries occurred in the area in November of 2008.
However, it will make them double-check that the sliding door is locked.
I found myself in Ann Arbor, Michigan last weekend for personal business on the coldest day of the year. I’d never been to Ann Arbor before, but now I think of it as a frozen, icy wasteland. However, the drive through blowing snow didn’t faze me. Michigan ain’t got nothin’ on Colorado. Sure, I could barely see, but there wasn’t anything on my windshield, the pavement was visible, and if I did go off the side of the road I was on a flat plain, not the edge of a mountain.
When I walked into my hotel room, I realized how spoiled I have been by my free trips recently. “Oh right,” I said as I looked at the bed which was at most [...]

Today I’m happy to announce the start of my Blog Book Tour 2009. “Wait,” you might be asking yourself. “Didn’t you already do a blog book tour back in May?” Why yes, yes I did. However, the marketing people from the publishing company shot me an email a few weeks ago asking if I’d like to do another tour since so many people are looking for inspiration now that their new year’s resolutions to lose weight are beginning to lose steam. I said that was fine as long as I didn’t have to leave my apartment. (It’s been negative degrees outside lately without the wind chill.)
So, the lovely Eva helped put everything together and you can follow the tour below. If you haven’t already bought a copy of Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir, you’ll have several chances to win one at the stops below. Thank you to all the bloggers participating!
