January 2009
January 29, 2009 at 7:29 am
1) Going to bed at 9:00 (yes, PM).
2) Watching a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie and enjoying it.
3) Sitting in a coffee shop and being annoyed by “those damn teenagers.”
4) Hearing a song on the radio and thinking, “I have that album…on cassette tape.”
5) Watching the ladies ice skaters at national’s and realizing they were all born in the 90′s.
6) Realizing I am older than Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, or Jimi Hendrix ever were.
7) Hating the snow because it’s hard to drive in instead of loving the snow because it’s fun to sled in.
8) Taking a ton of pills at night. (I skipped becoming my mother and went straight to becoming my grandmother.)
9) Feeling tired all the time.
What’s made you feel old lately?

This is why I’m working from home today. Car pushing is one cardio exercise I like to avoid.
At least I know I won’t run out to the store for chocolate.
January 27, 2009 at 7:49 am
I stared at the candy display rack for a moment before I grabbed two Cadbury creme eggs and a chocolate covered marshmallow heart. Then I started walking towards the ice cream aisle. In my way was a blonde man in a black leather jacket who was walking slowly towards me while holding a grocery basket . He kind of looks like my brother, I thought. Oh, crap. He is my brother!
I palmed the chocolate in my right hand and waved at him with my left. Ha! So funny to see you here I said, and Yeah, just finished my workout he said, and Like the new hair color I said, and Like your new haircut he said, and we continued to chit chat. In his basket were no-sugar-added fudge pops and lean ground beef and other disgustingly healthy items.
“So, what are you getting here?” He asked. I wasn’t sure if he knew the answer already, but I looked at the tile floor embarrassed.
“Uh, I was buying…chocolate,” I said as I showed him the creamy partially [...]

.
On Saturday I climbed 37 stories of the One America building with a Flip Camera in my left hand to capture all the coughing and hyperventilating. You can view my video blog about the race above. If you have dial-up or can’t discreetly watch videos at work, I will spoil the ending for you: I got to the top without keeling over. We were also one of the top 4 fundraisers for the event, an honor for which I won a mug. Instead of dividing it into 50 little pieces and mailing it to all my sponsors, I will let you have a sip from it if we ever run into each other.
You can view pictures of the event taken by The Indianapolis Star here. I’m not sure what my official time was because, quite frankly, the official race site sucks giant donkey balls. (Yes, that is my professional opinion.) I think I got in at just under 14 minutes. The fastest people did it in just under 4 minutes, which make me wonder if [...]

Mindless Eating seminar
I’m a fan of Brian Wansink’s book, Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, which explains some of the reasons we overeat. I also think it’s funny that he plays pranks on people with never-ending soup bowls in the name of science as the Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab. Wansink is giving an online seminar on Thursday, January 29 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm PST which is 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EST titled “How to Get A Grip on Mindless Eating.” It’s hosted by The Knowledge-Economy and tickets are $15, but you can win one of two free passes if you comment on this entry by 11:59 pm on Monday, January 26th. Please only enter if you’ll be able to watch the seminar. I don’t want the passes to go to waste.
You can still sponsor my “Bop to the Top”
At 12:59pm today I’m scheduled to start my bop to the top of the 37 story One America building downtown. There is still time to sponsor me [...]
