I'll second (or third) the comment that Macy's has a great Misses section, with frequent sales. Today I'm wearing a pair of Ralph Lauren jean shorts that I bought for $12 (original price $59.50). And I bought them in mid-June so it's not like you have to wait til the tail end of the season to get deals. Also, I don't know if they have these stores in your neck of the woods, but you can often get great deals at Filene's Basement. And as others have mentioned, oh the fun of TJ Maxx and Marshall's...though strangely not all of them are created equal. It seems some TJs/Marshalls/Filene's have better deals/selection of clothes than others so have fun exploring!

Hi PQ,

Try Lee jeans at the army/navy-type stores...or Liz Claiborne at Macy-type stores. I like the LL Bean jeans (and they have the added bonus of arriving it the mail, so you don't have to go to a mall!). I have fallen head over heels for Talbot's, but can only afford their sales. I NEVER would have guessed this about me, but it turns out that I am a bit of a clothes snob. I can't stand the cheap feel of most "bargain store" items. I'd rather have 3 or 4 nice shirts from Beans and do laundry often than to have every color from Wal-Mart. And I am getting really good at finding bargains (the real kind!). Oh, yeah...the Lands End section at Sears has some good choices, too. HAPPY SHOPPING!

This is the first time I've read your blog. I enjoyed your post. :) I hope to read more soon. I like your earlier comment "embrace your inner freak." :) I often embrace my inner nerd.

Take care and hope to see you out here in the cyber world again soon.

I know what you are talking about. Going into a store and having the people look at you like "Ok, the only thing she fits in here are the earrings and the sunglasses". I can't stand it. I used to be able to shop at those stores and one day I will be able to again.

Howdy,

I just wanted to say that I can relate to the dilemma of choice. I too am a size 12 these days (seemingly forever, boy do I love plateaus...) so I've had some time adjust to being this size, but I had the hardest time figuring out what stores to go into that had clothes I would like, and how clothes in various stores fit, after spending my whole adult life as a plus size. I won't bother naming my faves, because I'm in Canada, and that won't help you (unless you're a cross-border shopper...). I smiled and nodded my way through this post, as I do many of yours! Sometimes I think, that PastaQueen and I are sharing a brain! (In a good way, not in a creepy, psychotic kind of way I mean.)

For me, BWB's revelation above was important -- just because it fits, doesn't mean I have to buy it.

By an odd coincidence, I was shopping with my younger sister today at Forever21 and Charlotte Russe. That stuff is cheap junk. H&M has much higher quality material for about the same price point, though their clothes run smallish.

I tend to live in Gap Outlet because I'm really a basics kind of girl -- jeans, capris, t-shirts. Ann Taylor Loft when I'm feeling all trendy.

For things like plain t-shirts, I like to shop at Sears or Walmart. Seriously! I think the quality is actually not that bad and sometimes they are so in-expensive that you don't care how long they last. I wear white and black t-shirts a lot and if I can get them for under $10 I am really happy. I just got some t-shirts at Walmart on clearance for $3.50.

Now, for jeans... I grew up in the 80s and until I recently lost weight I was still wearing the 80s jeans, now referred to as "moms jeans". These are the ones with a high waist, little pleats in the front and tapered legs. I can't believe I was actually still wearing those now that I don't anymore. Go to a place like Macy's that has a ton of jeans styles and try on as many as you can to see what you like best. go outside of your normal comfort zone and try on low rise, flared legs, etc. Right now my favorites are Calvin Klein with low rise and flared legs (kind of pricy) and Levis low rise, flared leg. I also never thought I would like to wear low rise, but I love them.

Have fun shopping for your new body!

Try the 'sale' heading on the J.Crew website. Excellent quality at 50%-75% off.

I can't wait until I can shop in stores like that but I will keep shopping at the same store I shop at now - the thrift store. I honestly find as much stuff at thrift stores that I like as I do when I shop at mall stores with lots of things in my size, plus it's way cheaper and you have the thrill of the hunt.
