The last year and a half of running and eating well and lifting weights and Pilates has all been leading up to this. Two moves on two consecutive weekends.
I know some people train for marathons, but if you know anyone who is moving I think it would be more beneficial to train for that. Fill up cardboard boxes with free weights and walk up and down several flights of stairs. Rearrange all the furniture in your living room. Then move it back.
Last week was my move. This week my mother moved the rest of the contents of the house to her apartment. What she didn’t want we hacked up and threw in her friend’s truck for a surreptitious late-night dumping at a local dumpster. I have so many bruises on my forearms from carrying boxes that I look like I have an abusive boyfriend.
I don’t know how I would have made it through the past two weekends if I wasn’t in the good shape I am now. As it was, I went to sleep before 10 o’clock last night, which is very early for me. The sun had barely set.
But all this work I’ve done in the past weeks did give me an idea. Instead of wasting your money on gym memberships someone should start a service where you can volunteer to help people move! You’d get a great workout and you’d actually be accomplishing something instead of spinning like hamster in a wheel on a treadmill. Community service meets exercise. You could start out just doing first floor moves and then work your way up to 5th floor walk-ups with no elevators. Totally brilliant. I’ll have to go get started on that as soon as I have the energy to get my ass off of this chair. Maybe sometime next decade.

Okay, don’t laugh, but I volunteered to help my neighbor clean her horse stalls. Just for the exercise! Am I insane or what?
